This engaging, teacher-led lesson explores two of Africa’s most powerful and influential civilisations: the Kingdom of Kush and the Mali Empire. Students will uncover stories of warrior queens, powerful rulers, immense trade networks, and world-renowned centres of learning that shaped global history. Through guided discussion, storytelling, and reflection, this lesson challenges narrow historical narratives and builds pride in Africa’s legacy of leadership, innovation, and influence.
In this lesson, students journey into the achievements of the Kingdom of Benin and Great Zimbabwe, two civilisations that placed Africa at the centre of art, architecture, trade, and diplomacy. From the renowned Benin Bronzes and the grandeur of Benin City to the monumental stone structures and vast trade networks of Great Zimbabwe, students will gain a deeper understanding of Africa’s global impact long before colonial times. This lesson highlights creativity, innovation, and international connection as essential parts of Black history.
